The Offspring

Diccon (Cicada x Khar'pern)

Rules

• The Vulcan Peak is where homeless mares come to live as a sisterhood. Stallions may not live here except as captives or companions for the Leaders.

• Warriors keep mainly to fighting, Thinkers keep mainly to raiding, and Politicians may do both, neither, or act as diplomats. Members may issue their own battles and raids, but should generally consult the General, Codebreaker or Prime Minister for permission.

• All major decisions are determined by vote, but the Prime Minister maintains order within the Peak and has the final say.

• Elections for leadership positions will be held every TLI summer, provided the qualifying criteria are met.

• You can find detailed information about how the Peak works on the Rules page.

Ears twitched to the quiet that settled between their speech. With some such gaps might have weighed upon them, stretching awkwardly, for the golden lady she grasped firmly the opportunity those moments, attempting to read as much in the subtle whispers that told her tales beyond the blatentness of words. Sometimes silence revealed so much more she had come to learn. And with her countless days spent alone there was a small comfort in the quiet, a few seconds granted in which she could try and quell the nervous twisting within her... in which she could simply stand treasure the secret delight warming her from the company of one who genuinely wished to be there. He had not had to return. He did not need to stay. Yet there he was still, his scent filling her head each time she inhaled. The crisp fall air should have served to clear the mares mind, but instead his presence only fogged her thoughts and warped her will against her.

But she forced her focus back with a flick of her tail, listening more than sighting the movement of his pale frame. She could barely see the faint blur turn, just the shifting of his silhouette against the haze of background colour, but she listened keenly to the soft crunch of fallen leaves beneath his hooves, the clink of rocks, even the whisper of the grasses as they caught at his limbs. Then abruptly her breath caught in the confines of her throat as the warmth of his side brushed against herself, a quiver travelling through her at his touch. Instincts that had led to her survival all those years screamed at her to slip back, to pull away. But of course it was not so easy as that. Sooty limbs refused to move, and her heart felt no desire to.

The question she had posed to the stallion was virtually forgotten in that touch, but as his deep tones vibrated through that contact it was impossible to ignore them. Her breath was released in a soft sigh, virtually silent but betrayed by the faint clouds that formed before her nose before they were whisked away in the breeze. Part of her clung on to doubt out of sheer habit, yet Amica found herself truly unable to. So far in the steed company she had not felt a flicker of falsehood, his words filled her with a warmth she had never dared hoped for before and she could not help but turn her features aside to hide the hope he'd sparked within. She felt her heart pounding as dark ears cupped delicately to his lowered tones, wondering that she could hear them at all with how loudly it beat. Suddenly her mind was whirling, searching for reasons to persuade herself she could offer enough to outbalance the hindrance she might be. But the effects of so many scorned words, shunning whispers over the years could not be swept away in a few words. Though she buried them away amidst her few cherished memories.

Suddenly the cool breeze claimed Pagans place at her side as he withdrew, head lifting and drawn back to seeking him out instantly at his absence. But he had not withdrawn far, his form still filled her vision, his scent her head, and her dark velvet nose reached out to him not prepared to part just yet. "Sir, you out shine any kindness of mine with your own," she murmured shyly. I wish it.. I'll have you.. The words hovered longing to just spill from her lips. How long had she yearned for such words, and yet still she withheld. "For years I have been alone because others saw my failing. And now I shall be because I see it." Sorrow sang through her voice. "What I want is not necessarily what should be. What use is a smile or a few words of kindness if danger approaches that I miss? I could not have another coming to harm because of my failure." And still she could not walk away, the lure to her lonely heart too much.
