The falls. Why back to the falls. It was from there that curse had first come into effect. Through the moonlight and to shine against the dancing waters the golden angel had emerged to trespass across the lines of his mind. The lady’s loneliness had reached out to him even as he wrapped himself within the safety of the numbness of his soul. Something in her had tugged at him. Caused him to stay when he might have left, desiring to keep her from that world of his. She belonged in another. Where the sun shone and the birds sung. Wherever her searched for friends awaited her. Whilst here he remained within his own empty dark world, hiding in the shadows, watching time slip by without a hand in the changes that occurred constantly about him.

So why to the falls? Admittedly the stallion’s bottomless eyes had scanned the area as his strong bulk had arrived, seeking out that shimmering silhouette against the waters shining silver. But no, he was along. He permitted himself no flicker of disappointment at the discovery, and only the smallest thought to bubble up from the silent depths of his mind. A hope she had found her companions, or at the very least her place of safety to await them. But alone, the falls were as he wished them. The thunder of the waters crashing into the rocks and pool below was overwhelming as he edged closer and closer to its base. The noise, the icy spray.. he absorbed it all, welcoming it into part of what he was and letting it numb the body and mind as he had long ago learnt how.

Yet his thoughts would not be entirely stilled. For many alone they might have welcomed the company of their thoughts. He instead inwardly drew away. A snort erupted, cutting through the chill night air as a hoof clipped beneath the rocks underfoot. Figures ghosted through his mind, words exchanged and faces seen. He not wish to remember or care. He had no place in those lives.

The night was slowly creeping away. Only with the first blush of colour stealing across the heavens did the stallion finally stir from the stillness he'd settled to through the long dark hours. With the cold and lack of activity he discovered a deep ache running through his powerful limbs as just a few strides drew him away from the falls base. A low dull grunt left him, yet nothing more, no effort even made to return the feeling to his muscles. Slowly his head bowed to sip the clear waters, gazing without reaction at the features that stared back at him in the grey light growing all about. There was more life there before him than stirred within, the waters rippling and moving, deep below the flash of scales revealing the activity of tiny fish. Even with winter peeking around the corner life stirred all about him. And there he stood still apart.
