Making love to a m e m o r y

"If Love himself weep, shall not lovers weep,
learning from what sad cause he pours his tears?
Love hears his ladies crying their distress,
showing forth bitter sorrow through their eyes
because villainous Death has worked its cruel
destructive art upon a gentle heart,
and laid waste all that earth can find to praise
in a gracious lady, save her chastity."

The roar of the sea hummed gently in the background as she continued to chat with Ailill. The humid, salty breeze, lifted the strands of her mane to dance atop her topline briefly. When the young boy agrees to a tour, a short smile cracks Macabre's whiskered lips and she nickers kindly in agreement. She turns slowly on her haunches to face the looming palms of the densely-thicketed jungle and trots off toward it. She calls to Ailill again to make sure he was following. Once the shadows of the trees and brush covered the moist ground they walked across, the chestnut mare slowed to a walk, cocking her petite head to one side to gauge just how close the boy behind her was following. In an effort to be friendly, she racked her mind for conversation topics to share.

"So Ailill, how did you stumble upon Paradise? Have you been to Atlantis before?" She asks sweetly, dark, marbled eyes paying attention to her surroundings. Paradise was a beautiful place, but wrought with predators. From jungle cats to snakes to wild boars, to even poisonous foliage. If Ailill did not know that, he should learn soon. Chocolate lobes flicked forward and back as the sounds of the jungle altered. The low drone of the insects all around them sputtered as they passed by. Colorful parrots shrieked from their perches high above in the jungle canopy.

They continued to walk until the thundering sound of Paradise's waterfalls grew louder, giving way to a crystal clear pool of spring water, which connected to a stream nearby. Macabre didn't stop at the pool, however, she continued their trek around its muddy edge, and back around the backside of the falls. "There are some caverns over here." She said bluntly, her nose held high as her vision scaled the rocky walls they approached. "Some are big enough for several of us to stay in at night, if there's a storm."

"Hear then how Love paid homeage to this lady;
I saw him weeping there in human form,
observing the stilled image of her grace;
and more than once he raised his eyes toward Heaven,
where that sweet soul already had its home,
which once, on earth, had worn enchanting flesh."
