Hugely enjoyable, I agree. A wonderful end-game, indeed.
I was excited enough to share the result with an American neighbour here who often has to suffer through my explanations of how The Listener works out. This time, however, he had an interesting reply:
Some 50 years ago he used to play tennis with a Russian emigre in Philadelphia. For some reason, this man was shot at his home by an unknown assailant. (He later declined to press charges). Finlay visited Mischa in hospital and took along a small chess set as a gift. Mischa later got his wife to bring his favourite chess book from home, and Finlay then noticed, inscribed on the front page: "For my young friend Mischa, from Alexander Alekhine."
