Bob, I guess you mean the decision makers when you say "nobody in this conversation has any idea about the use of fixed wing aircraft". The unfortunate truth is that we are a very large country which does not have the finance, the political will, nor the population to set up anything like the coverage in the USA. In certain circumstances aircraft such as the C130 and DC-10, or other large capacity fixed wing aircraft, can be effective. In fires such as went through the south coast of Victoria recently they would have been of limited value. When a fire is moving at four or five kilometres an hour across a five or ten kilometre front there is little can be done except defend property ahead of the fire. As I said before, the prevention of fuel reduction burn-offs, tree preservation laws which don't allow removal of dense tree growth near buildings and people allowing gutters and roof valleys to become clogged with debris do nothing to help. Just look around at the loonies of the Greens and you can see where half our problems lie.
