The reason that the Ring-billed Gulls are still here is that Lake Simcoe has not completely frozen over this year for any length of time. The lake did freeze over on January 27th with a thin layer of ice but warm, heavy rains on January 31st took down the snowbanks and the lake opened up again. I see that the bay has also opened up now as well. They may stay all winter this year but usually leave when the open water disappears usually before the end of the year.
