The problem for Azed of course is a declining entry overall, so it's not that surprising that fewer different names appear in the lists. In fact the number of different names has increased as a proportion of the total entry in recent years, so if anything the degree of 'favouritism' has reduced. Unfortunately there's no way of knowing how many different individuals entered the comps.
Ximenes used to report regularly on complaints from competitors that the same names kept appearing, while theirs (the complainants') never did, and defended the position robustly on the grounds that the clues that did appear were better, by his criteria, than the ones that didn't, regardless of the author. Azed is more circumspect about this subject, but I suspect his views are similar. Replies:
