Re(3): Petition to ask the Independent Owner to Keep the Crossword

Really hope I'm not clutching at straws here, but why would the Indy abandon crosswords just because it moves from print to online? It would be a case of being the one to blink first, and to what end? The crossword has been an integral part of newspapers (even an essential part of their character – think The Times) for 100 years, and in the great scheme of things it's not an expensive part of the operation. Surely we don't have a national press thinking “We need to find an excuse to get rid of crosswords”.
Why would any news outlet drop something of proven popularity while all the others retain it?

Oh, and I have signed the petition!
