Re(4): Petition to ask the Independent Owner to Keep the Crossword

All good questions Dean, and many of them were asked by me and my crossword's supporters when News Corp rationalised the puzzle pages of 4 city papers in Australia in order to reduce costs by 75%. I had been paid no more than 50 pounds a puzzle over a 15 year period, a pittance. Yet "to save the paper" they were happy to forgo their cryptic crossword history (that went back over 50 years) and bring in a cheap syndicated import. A future online-only version won't be any different. Commonsense didn't seem to play a role in the circumstances - it was all about money.

I'm hoping this attitude is an Australian one and it won't be the same in the UK.

It'll probably come down to the cost of producing the Indy's online publication.
