I have a really invaluable Chambers Scots Dictionary which belonged to my Scottish mother-in-law. The dust jacket says it's 'A concise record of words in use from about 1650. Chambers Scots Dictionary serves as a glossary for Ramsay Ferguson, Burns, Scott, Galt, minor poets, kailyard novelists and many others. As a desk-size dictionary of the Scottish tongue it has no rival'. (My edition was reprinted in 1979 - I should imagine second hand copies are still available). Its rival which has the Scots language from the first records to the present day (my edition is from 1987) is The Concise Scots Dictionary published by Aberdeen University Press. It gives examples and historical origins.
