Azed 2,281 - a questionable clue? IP: 18.104.22.168 Posted on March 8, 2016 at 10:20:23 PM by Robin Gilbert
A while ago, I posted the comment and question reproduced below on the FifteenSquared site in response to John's blog of Azed 2,281, but there was only one further comment on the issue, which broadly echoed my concern. I should be very interested to know whether others think the clue is sound and fair and to hear their defence of that position.
Nothing - this I saw, if old (7) OVIDIAN
"Does anyone share my reservations about 18 down? It seems to me that “this” is doing double duty as both the definition (if that is the mot juste) and an indicator that “I saw” has to be translated into Latin? I can’t believe that Azed would ever use “I saw” as an indicator of VIDI without including a qualifier to show that Latin was involved. After all, even in the case of words that appear in Chambers (as “vidi” does not) and are marked as Scots, dialect or obsolete, he almost always includes such a qualifier. Indeed, he does so in this very clue, qualifying “if” with “old” to indicate the obsolete use of “an”." Replies:
