Why do they want a telephone number?
Regarding errors, I've committed them all over the years. Blank cells, transcription errors, you name it. A few years back I used to marvel at how some solvers never seemed to make any errors over several consecutive years. I wondered why so I asked them. I'm grateful that two or three top solvers replied, notably Simon Long. I précised their methods and haven't made any silly errors since (that is if I'm really trying, and if I've solved the crossword in the first place). I'll mail back my summary on request.
The key, of course, is a routine method applied consistently to every crossword. To apply it you must be willing to apply an unusual degree of obsessiveness to your solving, though the extra time taken lessens with practice.
