Having a way with words seemed a trait that ran in my family. It was the clever way that we weaved things together to create poetry that fell off the tongue. Flattery was a likely way to get in the good graces of many. So many desired a mere compliment that when showered with them they became flustered or easily cajoled. Besides, it was easy to do when in the company of a pretty lady. I would not doubt in her, I decided, because her physique boasted a very good lineage. Those legs would easily help catch us a meal and my prowess combined with it? A piece of cake. Or venison, whichever really. Instinct could never be forgotten even when training the mind of the higher arts lest the mind become a fallible place. I considered my own distinguished gifts of tracking as part intelligence and part instinct.
"Tundra?" There is surprise in my voice as I hadn't quite expected a wolf like HER to come from the tundra. Usually those wolves were recluse and often held bad attitudes. I preferred my company with a little more zeal for life.
"Ah, I see. Very fine points, very fine indeed! I prefer to be a mere loner and wow all the packs with my extreme flair for tracking, you know. I don't like to competition and the way it drives wolves to such extremes in packs." Well, that was my sudden reason, although I never had that reason before. It just came to me, quite like my brilliance.
"Plus I find the company of other loners much more attractive as they don't have that lackadaisical attitude of pack members. One must keep on their toes you know," I say in a flirty manner, winking at her before slowing my pace. We were growing closer to the deer and I assume that as I fall silent so will she. My paws seem to press silently into the earth now as I guide use closer to the clearing in which a spin off creek from the river runs. I see them - it is a small group, a few does, and one or two with fawns that flick their little tails and amble off with the carelessness of youth. They looked absolutely tender but in this I will allow my esteemed companion to choose - I got us here, now it was her turn to impress. With a glance her direction I fall back at her hips, allowing her the glory of leading this hunt.
