CHARITABLE ADVERTISING on Web Site There are many worthwhile charitable causes in existence, but we can only accept sponsorship or fundraising efforts on Fusilier Association websites, that specifically support approved Fusilier charities. This essentially means that it is acceptable to use these pages to seek sponsorship for The Fusiliers Aid Society (which includes Fallen Fusiliers), and The Fusilier Memorial fund only. We now have our own dedicated justgiving site (http://www.justgiving.com/fusiliersaidsociety), which you can use to help raise money for your cause. If you let RHQ (Asst Regt Sec) know the specific cause you are raising money for, it will be directed to the correct fund. Messages soliciting sponsorship for causes or charities other than the Fusilier ones mentioned above should not be placed on the message board and may be removed by the Webmaster.

LT COL J DAVIES

It is with great sadness that we report the sad news that Lieutenant Colonel John Davies died at the end of March in Toronto, Canada where he had settled. We have received no details with reference to his funeral arrangements; however, below is a short obituary which covers his career in the Lancashire Fusiliers (LF) and subsequently in the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers.

John Davies joined 1LF as a subaltern in Egypt in 1951 and was the Intelligence Officer during the operation to capture the Police Station in Ismailia in January 1952. He deployed to Kenya with the Battalion in October 1952 which for the next six months was the only British unit operating against the Mau Mau. In August 1953 the Battalion returned home after spending nearly two and a half years under operational conditions. Following staging at Barnard Castle, the Battalion moved in November 1953 to Iserlohn to join the British Army of the Rhine where he was promoted to captain and appointed adjutant. He was remembered as an outstanding sportsman representing the Battalion at soccer, cricket and boxing. Prior to joining the Army he had played for Surrey Colts. In 1960, he moved to the Depot in Bury to become the Training Company Commander. This was followed by Staff College, Camberley in 1961 and a staff appointment in Middle East Command in Aden. In 1963 he returned to the 1st Battalion as a company commander and in1967 attended the Joint Services Staff College at Latimer. A tour on the staff in Headquarters Cyprus District followed. In 1971 he was promoted Lieutenant Colonel and given command of an infantry battalion of the Royal Brunei Malay Regiment. His last staff appointment was with HQ SEATO in 1973. In 1975 he left the regular army and became the Secretary of the Queen’s Tennis Club. He later emigrated to Canada where he became Secretary to the Toronto Hunt Club where he joined the Lorne Scots and became their Honorary Lieutenant Colonel.
