I didn’t immediately notice the terror on his visage, but the tenseness was obvious. I am sadly used to such things, the first time I was startled, worried I had done something wrong as fear struck him, now I was used to it. A soft word or touch usually breaking through to him. That was why I always tried to speak before going too far. Someone broke my child and someday I would break their face. I heard the story, that it was father, but father would never hurt him, that the wolf spoke our family’s language. That was proof enough that it was likely some blood of ours and I feel like I heard of such a thing before. A wolf that looked like father but wasn’t… the only ones I ever seen were… well Hyrule and Orifel and never would they hurt their brother, but I felt I knew of another or heard of another.

I have been straining my brain, when I was young I often only thought about my family and brother and my training. I never really cared to meet any of my extended family because of how Azrael felt of me and my existence. Perhaps if I tried a little harder I would know who the bastard who hurt my son was. No one in Diveen anymore at least I am sure. Angels are literally everywhere though nowadays. They spanned all the packs and the freelands, it would be difficult to figure out who had hurt my boy. I let the moment between us pass, where he was in terror and I had plucked the twig from his fur and he spoke sounding almost guilty. ”Never worry dear, that’s why you have Mother around. I still pull things from your father’s pelt all the time, and believe me he lets himself get into some messes.” I say with a huff, though in reality a twig was nothing.

However the answer to my question makes me pause. I stand there feeling helpless to do anything for him but place my shoulder against his own. Always he had been a bit more… absent minded but never so literally. I wasn’t sure if there was anyway to help him other than following him around and making him recall what he had done. These blank spaces though could also be dangerous to him should he go wandering off and no one knows where he had gone. A bit away from his den that was close to our own was one thing but he could go wandering off into the free lands and it felt every time he did I was over here patching this scratch or something else. Or worse someday I go looking for him and never find him! I can’t get myself worked up over it now, I try to remain calm for if I am not how could he be?

He brings up Meryl then and I am not so sure. The healer feels a bit out of sorts himself and I question why he was put back in place after vanishing to god knows where for so long. Though I guess I couldn’t blame him for jumping ship when that Covet fellow took over… But it took so long for him to come back and he’s all scarred up, what healer gets all beat up like that? I learned to heal but nothing that could help Jaeger’s inner problems, I don’t know that Isola could help him either… Really Meryl was the only choice.

”I guess we could try to ask him if he could help. He would be the one to know out of all the healers we know I think.” I say not sounding wholly convienced myself. But I think that is simply my own unsureness. Meryl had always proven himself fine with patching flesh wounds every time Kane had gotten hurt or other wolves he had tended too. Just because he was… well small and ugly (and also one of Azrael’s children) didn’t mean he didn’t have some knowledge or skill. He was there when I was born after all and did try to help Saint I guess. ”Perhaps you should tell him sometime, I will go with you if you want? He has to know something.” I say assuringly. I really want to help him I hate this feeling of watching waiting for something to happen to someone else close to me. My father was murdered too after all, my mother taken away by the psychopath, and now someone wants my kids dead. I had protected Ninevah from the wolfess out in the freelands, but I couldn’t be there for everyone all the time. I wish there were more of me, but it was one step at a time right now and I wanted to do anything to bring comfort to Jaeger.

”For him hurting you, he will pay. We will find him. There cannot be many wolves that share your grandfather’s face after all. I know we have a lot of family but how many can there be who can hold that claim? If anything maybe that will bring you peace. Maybe once that happens everything will start falling into place again.” It was a hope I had at least… though rarely did it seem that revenge brought little more than more pain and suffering. It would make me happy at least.
