The forest stands tall and lush here; ancient trees reach weather-twisted arms to the sky, fighting monster-like storm clouds back with their interlacing fingers. Shadow seems to lurk everywhere you look, but it spills calmly, coolly, inspiring a sense of stealthy calm or protection rather than unease. That is, if you've forgotten what kind of creature might be stalking just out of sight...Abendrot is a land cradled by the dark woods on all sides; in the center, some of the larger trees stay behind to reveal a small plateau - a citadel where this pack can gather and defend itself from invaders. There are, of course, softer sides to the land. Clearings here and there allow the sun to throw down its rays in incongruously resplendent gold showers. Ignore the lingering scents of blood spattered here and there along the borders: those do not concern you. The river on one edge of the territory is playful enough when it hasn't been gorged by violent rain. You can choose to note the ragged claw marks raked down tree trunks and the forest floor as friendly "Home Sweet Home" signs, if you wish.

All who treasure loyalty, order, victory, and the occasional indulgence of raw visceral pleasure are welcome, once they've been approved by the ever-watchful eyes of Abendrot's Alpha. But keep one thing in mind: no matter what your motive, this is not a fool's Paradise. This is the land of soldiers, assassins, and spies. This is ABENDROT.

Make up your mind quickly and prepare to prove your worth. You wouldn't want to add to those blood spatters, would you...?

Fear Makes People Do Terrible Things

_________________________________________________________________________

The skinny pup looked at the small fawn that his mentor had taken down, but had not yet killed. He had assumed that she would have wanted to take the life of the smaller being herself, but instead he was looking at a form that was still breathing. Even though it could not feel pain anymore or move at all, as Halina had broken its neck. It was going to be much easier to make the kill since his prey could not move or fight back at all. Even though it was unrealistic of what it would be like to make kills in the future, it was a good learning tool to see exactly how it was to kill something that was larger than a squirrel or a hare. He had not often been able to kill those beings, but he had been lucky here and there to find one that was slow or injured. But it had always been messy, not neat and clean like this one would be. As his daggers ripped into the jugular he felt the blood enter his mouth, the metallic taste overwhelming him as the fawn quickly died.

The young brute raised his head, the crimson color staining his brown maw, which he began to lick away. The larger female nodded to him in approval, and he silently backed away. She let out a growl of warning, but he had made no move to take any of the meat for himself yet. He may be young but he was not stupid and he knew how foolish it would be to try and take the female’s meal. When Halina was done, Lupin stepped forward, eating his fill before they traveled back to Abendrot. The darker colored female had not eaten as much as the pup thought she would, and he ate almost as much as she did even though she was much larger than him. As the headed through the trees, the male noticed that Halina kept their pace a little slower than the one when they had come out to the plateau, but it still tired him. He did not complain though, even he had to put more effort into breath and he began to break out in a sweat. He knew that he could make it and wanted to prove it to Halina that he could do it and that she had made the right choice in taking him on as her protégé.

Finally, they made it to the borders of Abendrot, and the familiar scent reached his nares even around the still fresh scent of blood that had overcome him during their walk back. He dropped the carcass in the pack, and Halina tore a limb off of it. She instructed him to wait and then went off with the leg. He was not sure who she was bringing it to, but it was none of his business. Lupin sat upon the ground, not far from the carcass he had dragged here. He was panting slightly, taking a few moments to catch his breath. It did not take long before Halina returned and then called for the pack to join them. If they all showed up, then surely there would not be enough meat for them all, but maybe there would be enough for one or two not so hungry vargs, or another hungry pup like he had been. His green orbs looked around, waiting in silence to see if anyone else would join them.
