Pariah had been lurking on the outskirts, just far enough from the den that she knew she would never be in the way but close enough so that when hunger gripped her she would brave an approach. Morrigan had been kind to her. She had spoken more loving words than the pup had ever received in her life. The kindness scared the puppy almost more than a blow or a bite. Her little heart had grown determined but scared. She dared not allow herself get too close. She would not allow this to end.
Morrigan had started pacing her den, soft whines of pain coming from the woman. Pariah echoed them just outside the lip of the small cave. Fear kept her from entering though she longed to help the nice lady who had helped her. The moment she heard another approach the grey and red girl dived into nearby brush and rocks. Her coat helped her blend with the rock and dirt around her, the taller grasses hiding her in shadow. Tiny body quivering, paralyzed with fear she could not help but bare to fangs silently at the approach of the large male. What if he was going to hurt Morrigan or the pups? What if that food he brought was really to end her.
Pariah slowly inched forward. The tip of her blood red nose twitched as she sniffed at the meat Roman had brought. She looked up at the man, watching to make sure he was distracted by the puppies within the den. Watching him closely, Pariah slowly opened her mouth to attempt to rip off a small piece of meat. She did not know she would be stealing from the adopted mother who would have probably just given it to her. The sound of yet another approaching hit her red tipped ears. Pariah was away in a whisk, hiding again before any could see her. She watched the russet caretaker approach. Hunkering down she watched them, refuting Morrigan’s invitation in her mind. If she had new siblings she would not bring to them what was brought to her. Why should they be touched by someone like her? What good could she bring? She was nothing. Nothing. Nothing. The words raced around her mind in a flurry. Words she could not escape.
Her red eyes glowed as she watched the adult. Black and white rings around them shined from their bloody depths.
