thanks to everyone who recommended me books for my form book box aaaages back - i bought up a lot of them and the book box now overspills onto the shelf next to it.
it's still a bit of an uphill battle getting kids to read in form time, but very slowly we've had a few breakthroughs. i've got one girl who asked me earlier this year, "why read when you can watch the film?" - she still doesn't like fiction, but she's working her way through my non-fic history books avidly. one of the boys with low literacy levels who is a self-proclaimed book hater has recently joined the school book club, and another one of the top i-hate-reading-i'll-never-check-a-book-out-of-your-box-miss kids asked to check a book out this week.
we've still got a long way to go - there is a definite "reading is uncool" culture which is proving extremely difficult to break, but there's been an increasing number of individual successes.
