Re(1): Listener 4396 - The Listener Audience by Pointer

In my opinion this was one of the best puzzles of the year, one where, at the end, you are amazed that anyone could design such a perfect grid!

I cold solved about three quarters of the grid before trying to locate the J. My first guess seemed to work and it was quite easy to fill the grid. Then I spotted that PALESTINE could be an answer but was totally misled by finding NEPAL. I was looking for countries for a while until I found MADRILENE and looked up Palestine in Chambers. I re-read the preamble and started checking both the original and the changed letters. I was able to check the last soups through the remaining letters in the alphabet. PHO wasn't in my edition of Chambers but the Chambers Crossword Dictionary came to the rescue..

The definition of alphabet soup explained the unclued entries. I couldn't explain the title except that the initial letters were TLA. Great crossword, Pointer!
