While TLAs are usually three-letter abbreviations or initialisations, the most widely used definition among those who use TLAs is three-letter acronym. This may be from a common misuse of acronym to mean initialisation in particular. Whether that means Chambers should use one over the other I'll let others discuss. TLAs are used extensively in computimg and I would guess that is where TLA was first used itself. TLAs are, of course, limiting and so ETLAs also exist, extended three-letter acronyms (sic) being applied to those TLAs that exceed the required length. IMHO this helps prevent the proliferation of the ambiguous FLA, SLA, etc.
