"The Canadian wildlife estimates there are several hundred cats there." An estimate of 500 in Ontario is often mentioned. This was a "guestimate" based on unconfirmed sightings. Actual evidence is very sparse, and some of the animals were demonstrably former captives. I strongly doubt if Ontario wildlife officials would say there are 500 pumas in the province today. If 500 were present, there would be evidence of breeding, but there isn't. You could ask the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources.
