In my view it's about time the vehicle of "wordplay leads to the answer plus and extra letter" is put to bed. It is all but ubiquitous now and has been for far too long given that it has two major faults: it is easier for the setter than it is for the solver which is rarely a good thing; the truly accurate preamble is yet to be written.
(What seems like) A long time ago "first letters of superfluous words" were, rightly, regarded with disdain by a former Listener editor, "misprints" was put under a moratorium by the real Crossword Club, James Leonard banished DLMs from the EV. It's about time that a clever and innovative setter came up with an entirely new way to get a message from the clues. There's your challenge! Replies: There have been no replies.
