Urban Merlin Hunting

This morning about 10, I had the windows open and heard a Merlin calling as it flew through my neighbourhood in downtown Barrie, just north of the Library. I ran to a window just in time to see it circling a large, tall Basswood at the corner of Owen and Sophia. It was calling repeatedly, in what I believe was an attempt to flush birds from the tree. Sure enough, a Mourning Dove flew out and away to the southwest with the Merlin in pursuit 10 metres behind. The Dove is a strong, speedy flier and I don't think the Merlin had any real chance to catch it this time. Quite funny to see the Merlin, same size as the Dove chasing after it. Merlins would have quite small young at this time of the year and I wonder if it is raising a family close by. No doubt the same Merlin I have been seeing around here for the last year.
