I am the razor in the hands of your heart;
And I am the razor in the hands of God.
Evaline found refuge from the summer sun underneath the trunk of an old oak tree. There she stood idly, her head held low between her knees, and her hip cocked high on the right side so she could rest a creaking ankle. If only the younger version of herself could see herself now, the one that came here before Shamwari, Vita Nova and Paradiso were nothing more than a fleeting dream in her mind. She would be horrified. The palomino mare had worked hard for everything she had in her life. Even if there wasn't much to show for it now. She knew what it was like to be a lead mare. She what it felt like to have the sole attention and affection of a stallion. She knew what it was like to produce an heir. But here she was now, abandoned by her children, hiding on the Crossing from her new herd who lived in a land she couldn't loathe more.
The mare allowed a long, deep sigh to leave through her whiskered lips. A lone ear lobe flicked forward and back when the sounds of another came passing through the open land. Chocolate-colored eyes spotted the heavy set mare as she walked by. She tried to look away when their gazes crossed but it was too late, the stranger was coming this way. She was friendly enough, and perhaps Evaline could use a distraction. Even if Evaline probably wasn't going to be great company right about now. Still, she nickered eagerly in a friendly manner when the mare walked over.
Evaline considered her simple question with a short span of silence. She flicked her thick and flowing tail over her haunches feverishly as she thought about, surprised by her lack of ability to come up with the correct answer. "You know, I'm not really sure." Evaline said, looking at the mare with a genuine smile across her lips. "I've been here a million times. I've lived here for years. But I honestly can't remember where it is. God, I should get out more."
