The Times also cites screen readers having problems. Bad software is not an excuse for changing the world - it's a reason to fix the software.
Although I am astonished that people don't know, in context, what these abbreviations mean, if it is so, it is an indictment of the government's own education system and they should fix that instead of pandering to the ignorance. I have sometimes seen "i.e." preceding parenthesised examples so, perhaps, the truth is that it is the government who don't understand the terms they try to use.
It is the barbarians at the gate - and not a simplification at all - but it is, unfortunately, I fear, an unstoppable trend. Replies:
