I don’t think that the Government is telling anyone what to do, Will, just choosing the grammar for its own websites. It seems a good idea to me to choose grammar that those without full command of English would find easiest to understand. I can’t see their websites using ‘for example’ instead of ‘eg’ making the slightest difference to how others write.
Not everywhere is quite so considerate. Here in Girona the local council has a policy of speaking Catalan. If you go in and speak to them in Spanish, most of the people working there will speak back to you in Catalan. They can all speak Spanish and may realise that you don’t understand Catalan, but they do it with the aim of preserving a language (or just to be pigheaded, depending on your point of view).
