It would be stereotypical to thing that winter was Titan’s favorite season. He was more serious than most and a little more somber. His pelt was thick and well suited to the briskness of the season. He actually found winter very difficult because of the color. Large prey was already more sparse during winter than the other months and his inability to blend in with the snow made eating all the more challenging. Winter was just edging in and although the gloomy skies were promising heavy snow, today a small frost over the greenery was the only sign of the season.
The pack was still more or less dead. Titan had not seen Horizon since their one-on-one immediately following the most recent pack meeting. The male could be working on his rank audition assignment or could simply be laying low for a while. He had also seen his co-alpha, Ameira, just a few weeks ago. They met and discussed a variety of topics, the majority being related to pack matters. Other than those two the crimson and black male hadn’t seen another pack member since that meeting. He knew they were going to call another one soon, probably whenever Horizon turned back up and was more than likely awarded the gamma rank, but until then he had to wonder why the pack had become so barren. The other wolves had all pledged loyalty to Titan at that meeting, some more hesitant than others, so he didn’t assume that they abandoned Munashii because of his presence. Then again none of them were pups and they were free to spend time away from the packland as they wished as long as they could gather for meetings and group hunts.
The colossal lupine walked leisurely towards a small creek that ran close to the den he had taken up in. He had fallen asleep at the highpoint of the afternoon and decided after refreshing himself with a drink he would take a lap around the border. The darker blues and blacks of night were just beginning to saturate the sky. He reached the break in the trees that gave way to the creek but he never managed to take a sip before noticing another wolf already there. He was sure that his heart had jumped into his throat because he was finding it difficult to inhale. A gorgeous wolf with all shades of tan covered in chocolate hues along her back. An equally warm shade of coffee brown eyes stared back at him. When he realized that he wanted to speak he reminded himself how to breathe and suddenly took a sharp burst of air into his lungs. As if she had been waiting for a cue, as soon as he gasped she turned around and began running, following the creek away from him further into the trees on the other side.
“Akina! STOP!”
Scarlet paws were pounding the ground as quickly as he could move them. He could just see her tail constantly threatening to disappear into the scenery ahead of them. His steely bands of muscle propelled him forward at what felt like the fastest he had ever run but he stayed just the same distance behind her. He pushed harder and harder and his breathing became shallower. They carried on until his lungs felt like they were on fire and even further still. His tongue hung out of the side, flopping dryly against his cheek. He felt like he couldn’t take in enough air no matter how rapidly he panted. They approached the Munashii Gekko border. Akina flew past it with no change in her step. Without a second thought Titan bounded forward to follow her but as soon as he tried to cross the territory line his body slammed against something and sent him tumbling backwards. He felt like he rammed directly into a tree. He immediately jumped back up and trying to leap back onto the path to follow after Akina but once again was stopped from being able to move past the invisible line that marked off the territory. There was no tree or anything he could see but it was like an invisible wall was placed in front of him. His eyes desperately searched beyond it and the she-wolf was nowhere to be seen.
With a jolt, Titan awoke nestled in his den where he had laid down to nap in the highpoint of the afternoon. His body was tense and considering how unrested he felt he was sure that nightmare had consumed his sleep. His mouth was dry and the thought of running up to the creek crossed his mind. Just as quickly, though, he dismissed the idea. As much as he disliked winter for the disadvantage it gave him at cloaking himself in shadow, it did offer an almost constant access to water. He crawled out of the den and began lapping up frost from the blades of grass outside his den. The pack was as quiet as he had expected and he knew winter probably wouldn’t help to liven things up. After licking up enough frost to satisfy his parched throat, he began his trek towards the border to perform a nighttime watch, leaving what remained of the nightmare at the den to hopefully dissipate before he returned.
