The smallest movements can sometimes attract the eye. It was how the best hunters found the little fawns hiding in plain sight in an open field. And it was how Halcyon knew he wasn’t alone on this cold, winter’s night. At first, he thought it was just a large snow flake falling from the clouds, but then it moved again in the same pattern. When he turned his head to get a better view, it vanished. Standing up, the small wolf gazed out at the land before him, his honey eyes trying to pinpoint exactly where he had seen the movement. The world was still, save for the falling snow and gusts of wild wind. Maybe he was just seeing things after all. The red wolf was about the shrug it all off and try again for sleep, but just as he turned his head, a strange iridescent glow caught his attention as the clouds parted for a single moment. The light of the moon saved the pup as his red and blue eyes caught the shine and reflected it right at Halcyon. Braving the cold once more, the older wolf darted into the frozen world without hesitation. Keeping his eyes directly on the boy’s, he was able to make his way to him without losing him in the white world. The pup’s colors were perfect for hiding in the snow. If that was a blessing or a curse, it would be up to him to decide. Standing in front of him, just a few feet away, Halcyon offered a kind smile to the child, hoping he didn’t scare him away. The russet wolf was by no means big, but compared to the small cub, he was a giant. "Hey there, you lost?" he asked, hoping to get a response from the cub. For a moment, he gazed around the area, trying to see if there was another white wolf hidden somewhere in the snow. Maybe this was a cub of a lone couple or maybe he had wandered from a nearby pack. But there was no one else around. The other animals had wisely taken shelter from the winter storm before the night air stole the air from their very lungs. Returning his attention back to the kid, he took a tentative step forward. "I have a place we can stay that’s safe and warm. When the storm dies down, I can help you find your mom. What do you say?" Not waiting for an answer, Halcyon crept forward and attempted to pick the cub up in his teeth by the scruff. If the child ran, he wouldn’t chase but he would not let him out of his sight. If he allowed the older wolf to grab him, he would carefully carry him back to the cave and out of the chilly night. |
