I remember seeing the Beach Boys at the Sahara Tahoe Hotel near Lake Tahoe on the border of Nevada and California in January, 1980. This would be the first time they played at a Casino!!
Anyway, I was 17 years old, and dressed to look 21! And brought a stack of my LPs to try and get signed, among them SUNFLOWER. I soon encountered Mike Love coming down to the Hotel's Snack Shop to get some snacks and some juices to take up to his room. I stopped him and asked him for autographs and when he got to the SUNFLOWER album, he was admiring the cover photo of him and his kids. He seemed to drift off for a moment and I then told him how much I loved the album and was hoping "the band would perform a song or two from album" at the show later than night, which didn't happen. They did preview "Goin On" which had just been finished a day or two before.
Anyway, all of these years later, I still have the album with the signatures and still consider it to be my favorite Beach Boys' album--mostly because it is truly a 'complete' group effort. And Stephen Desper's work on the album makes it an amazing listening pleasure. It stands the test of time all these years later, and I still give copies of the CD to friends, who think they know the music of the Beach Boys. Most are completely blown away. And that's a nice feeling!!
The album is clearly a lost gem!! But still glad people are discovering it and it's getting the due it deserves!!
