The king glanced up as the main door swung open. The man in front of him kept on talking as Arthur's grey eyes settled on Mallos. The Spaniard made his way across the room prompting a great deal of shuffling and fidgeting amongst the guards. With a sigh of resignation Arthur looked back at the man at the foot of the steps. He could almost feel his eye twitch as Mallos came up behind him and started to drum on the back of his chair, setting his teeth on edge.

"No," Arthur said, waving to the guard on the door to admit the next petitioner, "I haven't." He reached for the goblet of wine on the table beside him and took a long drink. He always seemed to drink more when Mallos was around.
"I have wondered a lot of things today however. I have wondered why a group of shepherds think I can bring back their sheep after they have grown fins and swum away. I have wondered what on earth Mrs. Applebottom thinks I have to do with the disappearance of her daughter who, apparently recently met a merman with particularly well toned shoulders. I can't possibly think where she could have gone." He set his goblet back down on the table with an audible clunk.
"I now find I am wondering why you are here and why it should worry me."

Arthur sighed as an elderly woman was brought to the foot of the dais. He smiled at her and one of the clerks standing behind the throne shuffled forwards with her petition. Accepting it, Arthur scanned the content for pertinent information with a practiced eye.
"I cannot see this being a problem," he said after a pause, handing the parchment back to the clerk, "next time a ship returns from The Peaks there will be space made for you and your livestock on it. There will be no charge." The woman thanked him and was escorted out by the guard. Arthur rounded on the clerk.
"I thought someone was supposed to filter these!" he demanded, gesturing at the pile of scrolls with a weary expression, "I haven't heard a petition today that I actually needed to hear." As the door opened at the far end of the room Arthur stared out at the crowd beyond. The flood had been as disruptive to government as it had everything else. The halls were full of people who needed something or other and half of the staff had vanished to help their now homeless families. Arthur poured himself more wine.

He gestured Mallos closer, smiling slightly.
"Get me out of here?" he mumbled, his mouth hardly moving, "so long as it's not into the bed of a sea monster, I don't care where."
