Svea took his casual contact in stride, without shying away or seeming afraid. Her trust made Eskel feel guilty, and tempted. He moved a little closer to her in spite of himself. This is not the mission, the Presti-voice reminded him. For a moment, Eskel wondered if that man was in his head, watching through his eyes. He knew he should ask about the brothers and father – that sounded like the only line of questioning that fit with what he was supposed to be doing here – but he was distracted by her words, and even more distracted by her blush. He could feel his heartbeat in his throat.

Maybe the God had sent this woman to tempt him. She was exactly the right type for it, after all; the right height, the right build, the right coloring, the right balance of ease and modesty. If he’d met her in a bar he would have made it his mission to take her home. The thought, in this context, was unnerving.

“Then you know you are dreaming?” he asked, instead of pressing the matter of his presence there. He was close enough to feel the cool radiating off of her, close enough that the edges of the dream were blurred. In the real world, I am drunk, he reminded himself. At least drunk. Reel it in.
