10 things you probably didn’t know about the relationship between Aura and Mallos
1. Aura and Mallos shared a unique relationship in each other’s lives whereby they confided more in each other than in anyone else, but this wasn’t equal. Mallos was actually more open with Aura than she was with him, because she had a greater fear of disappointing him than he had in disappointing her.
2. As the oldest original fairy, Aura was the most out of touch with the times, the real world, and ordinary people. As the youngest, Mallos is the most in touch.
3. As a pair, their strengths and weaknesses were very complementary. In addition to the above, Mallos was articulate and Aura feared public speaking; Aura was stubbornly morally righteous and selfless, while Mallos couldn’t tell the difference between right and wrong; Aura didn’t like children and Mallos loved them. One of their differences actually shifted over time: initially, Aura was adventurous and impulsive, while Mallos was quieter, more serious and reserved; with age, they switched around.
4. There is an 11 year age gap between them.
5. Mallos has different ways of interacting with men and women, but he treated Aura more like a man than a woman. This is actually a sign of respect from him.
6. Mallos used to go to Aura for love advice (when he did actually love people and wasn’t just stringing them on), which she found both touching and a little exasperating, since she was much less experienced in that field than he was. She knew about his long-term crush on Kiya and used to conspire to try and hook the two of them up, like a true BFF.
7. Their relationship was always very brother-sisterly, right down to driving each other nuts occasionally.
8. Aura was the first person to believe Mallos could achieve anything in his life. Despite being a fairly poor judge of people in general, she read him accurately very quickly and recognised that his potential was being wasted. He always saw her through slightly rose-tinted lenses because of it.
9. Mallos used to give Aura elocution lessons. Later in their lives, Aura gave him morality lessons. With quizzes. “What would you do in this situation, A, B or C.” “Umm, C?” “WRONG!”
10. Having Aura as a role model moulded Mallos’ personality in a variety of ways. One of the most unexpected was his disinterest in attaining power. He saw the pressure she was under and decided it wasn’t for him; he worked to become International Ambassador and then settled at that, rejecting offers of promotions.
11. Bonus 11: since Aura died, Mallos has been trying every possible way of contacting her. He hasn’t succeeded yet, but is still trying.
