Her previous sneaking up on him caused Thoth to be more aware than usual of Sekhmet’s whereabouts. As he dug through the snow he knew she had wandered away to play with this or that beside the water. He looked up and over at her, just to make sure she was not doing something stupid. Young as he was, he had taken it upon himself to ensure she was at least somewhat taken care of. Though one cannot stop stupidity, he figured she would be above such things. Soothed, he continued his work on the cache he was creating.
As Sekhmet approached, Thoth bristled slightly. One day, few would be able to enter such proximity to him without being bitten. She, however, could brush against him unscathed. He eyed the odd object in her jaws a second before he found it pressed into his own. The salty flavor shocked him and he jumped back, accidentally crushing down on the item. More salty water gushed into his mouth, creating a gurgling in the back of his throat. He spat it out and glared at her for this trickery. However, she was licking her lips to also get the taste from her and he grudgingly forgave her. Curious once more, he stood over the sponge and poked at it with his large paws. It was a strange thing, possibly could be used against others in much the same way it had accidentally been inflicted on him. Careful not to bite down, he hooked parts of it with his teeth and carried it back to the hole that held the skull. It was not exactly what he was collecting, but it was interesting enough.
With a snort from his nose, he looked back at Sekhmet who was peering greedily into the water. Thoth’s eyes narrowed. Soundless, he raced up to her and bowled her over, away from the water that could quickly become deep. Irritated and chastising he chattered his teeth at her, the sound of jaws on jaws breaking just over the sounds of the waves. Chasing the silver streaks below the surface was exactly the kind of thing he would not let his charge do. Even if it was her desire to possess it. There were other sould in the world she should chase.
