Winter had been dreadful for her and she had not forgotten it despite the coming summer. When she had awoken, she had found the fields inundated with fox and wolf alike. They seemed to pour from every hole and crevice, demons with a hunger beyond what the rabbits could provide. They had eaten and eaten until she had been left hungry! That, too, she had not forgotten...or forgiven. Their presence had forced her away from the woods and fields and desperately, she had begun to search closer and closer to the packs. She had more than just herself to feed, after all - at her hip, more often than not, two children. They did not need to know just how difficult things were and so, she had taken to allowing them to roam as she searched through old caches and for carcasses left unattended. If she had to, she would go closer to the packs and yet...she preferred otherwise. It was on another failed excursion that she had become aware of a rank scent in the air - wolf. She knew it well, her heart pounding in response as she sucked in a breath. The wolf was close, dangerously so, and yetit seemed alone. They are seldom alone for long, she knew. It hurried her pace, her mind focused entirely on one task: dispatch. The threat needed to be ended before it had a chance to blossom. Strange, though, that the wolf only took to watching her children. Yet, she did not stop to ponder it. Rather, she charged with a bellowing roar, thundering towards the wolf's flank as she rose to her back legs. She swung her paws, her claws seeking to rake into the flesh; she had no time to ask questions, she needed to be sure her children did not have time to fret. Instead, she swung again and again, several times before she charged towards her cubs, grumbling as they flocked to her sides. She stayed on guard for a moment and yet, she doubted the wolf would look for a fight; instead, she roared once more before she turned to take her cubs elsewhere, her hunt and their play cut short. |
