Making love to a m e m o r y

"If Love himself weep, shall not lovers weep,
learning from what sad cause he pours his tears?
Love hears his ladies crying their distress,
showing forth bitter sorrow through their eyes
because villainous Death has worked its cruel
destructive art upon a gentle heart,
and laid waste all that earth can find to praise
in a gracious lady, save her chastity."

Macabre approached the pregnant mare apprehensively. She silently marveled at her roundness, not in an unkind or jealous way, but more in anxious admiration. The petite chestnut mare had been pregnant just once. She'd given birth on the island of Tinuvel to her one and only child, a sickly colt she'd warmly named Shiraz. It had been years since the small child had come into her life and left almost just as quickly, but the memories still stung if she thought about them for too long. Macabre hadn't returned to Tinuvel since she abandoned her son and let him die alone there. She vowed from that day on that she was unfit to be a mother, even if she so desperately wanted to be one.

Macabre smiled gently to Lillith as she approached. But before she could continue with the usual pleasantries, the bay mare introduced another -- a lone stallion -- which startled her. Macabre's petite head shot up high over her withers and her nostrils flared, taking in the intruders masculine scent. He seemed friendly enough, his drawl somewhat hard to decipher at first, but the fact that he was here at all was alarming. Macabre's dark marbeled eyes searched the immediate area for Vodnik. While she could certainly smell him, the heavy draft stallion was nowhere in sight. The mare merely snorted, and took several bold steps closer to Lillith, almost in a defensive way. The mare was, after all, with child. And if need be, it would be her duty as lead mare to defend her.

"Vodnik is the name of the stallion who oversees this territory." Macabre said smoothly and in a matter-of-fact sort of way. She eyed the stallion carefully, smiling weakly as he continued on with his somewhat bizarre story. "Are you looking for someone or something in particular?" She asks, flicking her tail over her haunches and casting Lillith a glare with her side eye. When Macabre initially approached the bay mare, she was hoping to get to know her some in a casual sort of way. This wasn't at all what she expected.

"Hear then how Love paid homeage to this lady;
I saw him weeping there in human form,
observing the stilled image of her grace;
and more than once he raised his eyes toward Heaven,
where that sweet soul already had its home,
which once, on earth, had worn enchanting flesh."
