In the shadows of two of the tallest peaks in the mountain range, rests the land known as the Forbidden Dale. The forested path that winds down out of the mountains is steep and treacherous to those who do not know it's dangers. The mountains meld into rolling foothills - filled with broad gentle slopes, long narrow ridges, and miniature valleys. Vegetation of all sorts is abundant and the runoff of all the surrounding hills funnels into a long, narrow lake in one of the largest valleys. Beyond the undulating and green foothills resides a dark and deep forest; the trees are so dense that it is dim even in the light of day.

The last few seasons had come and gone, nothing really to separate them other than the slight changes in scenery within her home, the Forbidden Dale. Aileen kept up her normal schedule, or what she recalled of it anyway, making sure to cover every inch of ground within the forest of the Dale. It was a release from the wretched prison, which also blurred in her mind for the most part. Cold...White...Somewhere between clinging on to the hope of existence and embracing the sweet, sweet mercy of death.

She had missed her home, she had wanted to come back so badly, but since she had been in that cursed land of eternal winter, time had passed. The Dale, although familiar, somehow felt foreign under her hooves. She rarely (if ever, it was difficult to recall) encountered the other residents of the kingdom since her return, but she didn’t mind. Even though the forest nymph was physically fine, she couldn’t help wondering if this was what being undead was like.

Monotony, retracing old paths mindlessly, just for a clue on what happened, the same blurred winter scape repeating like a tape on rewind, that you just watch forward again. It made no sense.... This was what the tawny, spotted Dryad had wanted, right? She had recalled living as so much more than this. She had gone back to the life she had known, and was indeed grateful for it, but it felt like every bit of life and wonder that she had known had disappeared - or rather, was obstructed by the painful memories of her captivity.

She wanted it back, she wished that horrible time she had spent with the fiery queen would just erase itself, but it couldn’t. She simply had to deal with that fact and move on. Only those who could adapt and move on would survive, such were the ways of the Earth, and she was a part of that, so why was accepting it so difficult?

To attempt to bring light back into her world (and keep her promises), she had allowed the king to implant his seed within her about mid-summer, she felt something other than what she had been experiencing, but then it was back to the same routine.

Earlier in the autumn, she had given birth to the product of her and her king’s night, somewhere within the quiet forest borders, a second beautiful daughter: Melia. Her youngest was enough to keep Aileen on her feet, and although she had been going through the healing process a little at a time, somehow, being a mother again made her feel better. Melia reminded her of the light and vibrancy that life provided, watching her discover things in her childish wonder, it brought a tender smile to her velvatines.

Speaking of her children, her mind had frequently wandered to her and Rhaego’s first child, Andela, who was now grown. That wrenched her heart, knowing that she was absent for such a long period of the girl’s life.

She had been near the forest’s borders, teaching her gold, black, and white-sanded daughter more about the land that the two lived happily within. She then heard the deafening crack, before it seemed to reverberate through the ground. Something was strange about this. As far as the nymph could see, there was no sign of a storm, but that sound was too close for it to be far-off, and the way the ground seemed to carry the sound into the Dale… something was not right, this was the conclusion she came to almost immediately.

As any other would, she started cantering towards the source of the sound, slowly enough to weave between the other trees that held the lives of her sisters (fellow dryads), but quickly enough to get near to the source of the thunderous noise.

In this snap decision, she had not considered Melia, so the filly found herself being left behind, confused, and racing to start catching up with her mother. Towards the edge of the forest, close to the borders of the Forbidden Dale, she heard a call, it sounded like a mare. It was nothing out of the ordinary, and surely her king would be there to deal with whoever it was.

She continued going, Melia following close behind, and when she emerged from the treeline that had previously obscured her vision, before her was a scene unfolding that made her wish she could have taken a different route, one that would have taken her longer.

The forest-born woman skidded to a stop, suddenly feeling the adrenaline that sound had given waver, feeling drained from all the energy she had just used, before taking in the scene before her, the way that he looked at the filly beside the lithe, unknown woman, the way he was taking bold steps toward the mare of brandished gold. She knew that look, the one he was giving both of them, the filly, Rhaego wouldn’t have cared about if it weren’t his own, so he was making sure she was up-to-par with his other offspring, and the mare, that gaze, that stare of enticement.

Aileen recalled this very same coy glance that they would share on their wonderful evenings together, but more than that, there was intrigue there, but before the dryad could process this fully, the king who she had served for as long as she could recall, the one she shared a special bond with… or so she thought before this instant.

The action that occurred in about five seconds that shattered every sense of calm she had, every bit of patience she had was suddenly gone. In an instant, her expression changed from her original mesh of concern, disbelief, and horror to the emotion that swelled within her bosom, before spreading to every last inch of her body, ears folded flat, tail flicking from side to side, narrowed eyes, flared nostrils, bared teeth. Melia immediately hid behind nearby brush, she had never seen her mother like this, but knew instinctively that it could not mean good things were coming.

“How could you… How do you justify what you have done!?” The enraged Spanish Mustang marched stiffly towards the warlord, intense emotion showing through every part of her.

“Answer me, how dare you do this, go behind my back while I waited for you in that horrible place!? Or is this new? Do you even understand what you’ve DONE, RHAEGO!? Come, tell me, what reasoning in this world do you have for… for betraying me in this way!? She was right next to the pair now, holding Rhaego’s gaze, the jealous rage clear.

She had always known Rhaego was an ambitious king, it shouldn’t have been a surprise that this happened at all. Laughing to herself, tears started to roll down her cheeks, “I suppose I was a fool believing… that I was… anything to you… that I didn’t think that eventually… I would be thrown to the side and discarded. I guess… all that time, all those memories, they… THEY DON’T MEAN A SINGLE THING, NOW DO THEY!?” She wailed, before taking more shallow breaths, then spitting out something barely more than a whisper on the wind,“Hail to the king, who has no integrity… hail to the king, who deceived me mercilessly…. Tell the nymph who trusted you so… Are you now happy?”
