We were on the move, and I quickly fell into step just behind my uncle's shoulder without question. Baird was there too, at first, but my attention was focused on Sleekwing and where we were going. At first I thought maybe we were seeking out a better arena for practicing sparring maneuvers, but the longer we trekked on in silence, the more obvious it became that fighting techniques were not on the agenda today. Oh, I thought to myself, realizing that we followed a trail that was distinctly 'Sleewking,' Border patrol. Admittedly, I was a little bit disappointed by the realization, but I knew that the current Castellan was good at his job - he'd been doing it long enough to prove that much. Upon realizing this, I focused on matching his stride and relaxing into the movement. Just as I began to allow my senses to fan out, I noticed that Baird had dropped back and I glanced over my shoulder, wondering what he was up to. Had he already gotten bored with the lesson? I half considered going back to see what he was doing, but then Sleekwing began speaking about the importance of border patrol, and I allowed my attention to refocus on him. It was important I take away as much as I could from today's lesson.
Of course, as soon as the question was posed, Baird was right there again, ready to answer and I glanced over at him. I wasn't necessarily annoyed by his timing, but I did wonder if Sleekwing had noticed that he'd missed the first half of his speech. Well, whatever, I had been here for it. As Baird spoke, I cooked up my own, unique answer to the question. Trespassers would be the obvious way to go, and I even liked what the other young wolf had to say about the natural changes in the land, but I had something else to add. I nodded as Baird finished and Sleekwing's attention turned to me.
I thought it was a pretty good answer, and I looked to Sleekwing momentarily for his approval or whatever he might have to add. But then my eyes glanced around, nostrils flaring in search of anything that might stand out as abnormal. Of course, by this point we had already passed the pile of dung that I should have noticed.
