Too close. He let her pull away from him and made no move to follow, noticing the shift in her eyes colour, the darker tones at the roots of her hair. Arthur said nothing. He leaned to his left and pulled open the draw of the dresser. His hand disappeared and remerged a moment later clutching two packs of cards. The king placed them on his knee before returning his attention to the drawer and producing two stacked horn beakers full of dice. Pushing the cards haphazardly into the beaker he tucked it under his arm ,collected his goblet and the bottle of the wine and wandered across the room towards her. Arthur perched on the edge of the bed by his pillows and settled his cargo on the bedside table.

"I might actually find that interesting," he joked as his fingers explored the gap between the bed and the table. "Ahha!" he said triumphantly, interrupting his own train of thought as he produced the tray he sometimes ate his breakfast from on the rare occasions he got chance to stay in bed past sunrise. Pulling the blankets flat he settled it on the mattress between them and placed the beakers down on top of it with a grin.
"Where was I? ...you see, I said I was getting old" he cast around, trying to remember what he'd been saying. "Oh yes! Do you know I have never managed to get lost in a crowd? Battlefields are crowded, and I've seen crowds from castle windows...but that ability to wander in amongst everyone observing them, understanding them...I've never had that." Arthur paused, handing her a beaker and three dice, "do you know how conspicuous you feel when people start bowing and moving out of your way everywhere you go? You never get to see them as they are...and they never get to see you."

He smiled at her again as he emptied his goblet and set about refilling it. She saw him. She was one of the few people left in the world outside of his family who knew Arthur the man, not just Arthur was the king. He didn't mind admitting that he loved her for that. Holding up the wine bottle he offered her a refill before nodding down at the tray.
"Your move, my lady," the king laughed, "and I'll tell you all about the petitioner who spent over an hour telling me all about how her neighbour spent three months impersonating one of her goats in order to steal her food. The mental images alone almost made it worth every excruciating moment!"
