Pine shook her head almost wildly in answer to his question. Aster had truly been lost. Her scent had fled the marshes and had grown stale in the common lands, covered by heat and by fire. It was a small blessing to know the princess could hide herself so easily. Those who remained true to the fallen throne would be able to remain to fight for it one day. Slowly but surely Halcyon’s words started to sink in and calm her. She would not be alone in this, he would help her. Others would help her and come to her side. One way or another.
His name is Aranck. He killed Athine and stole the crown. Some are still stuck there. Laz, Undye. Those were the two she knew needed more protection. Despoina fled, but her family is still here. At the word ‘family’, Pine’s heart sank and twisted painfully in her chest. The pain was so bad her breath caught and she struggled for air. Big Wolf was still there. But Big Wolf could take care of himself. She was sure of it. He had taught her everything she knew. If there was anyone who could survive the mutiny, it would be him.
Forest green eyes still looked back in the direction of the moors. She had to fight to keep tears from falling from her face. She could not even call to her father to tell him she was alive, let alone possibly safe. Pine took a breath and felt herself harden with the inhale. This would not stand. She would breath through this. One way or another.
We needs friend, Halcyon. We need… we need a pack. Can you help us get one? Or two, she thought. Anyone at all who could help them, stand by their side, and stay there once Aranck had fallen.
