Listener No. 4422: Buried Treasure by Poat IP: 188.8.131.52 Posted on November 18, 2016 at 04:48:33 PM by John Nicholson
I highlighted HARE in the preamble which I spotted fairly quickly and was happy with, after all it is not long since we had to highlight the setter’s name in a Magpie prize puzzle. However, as usual I read comments on Answerbank after finishing. There normally aren’t any hints; I just enjoy reading what others thought of the puzzle. This time though there was a bit of a discussion with some saying that the treasure could be found in the grid and wouldn’t be allowed in the preamble. I searched again and after some time saw H A R E in a straight line starting with the H of VEHEMIC and ending in the E of JOE BLOW. It seemed to make sense as SEARCH AREA could be traced running through the middle of it. Also the mention of letters rather than cells seemed to confirm that one of the double letter cells was involved. Finally I thought it neat that the letters, although consecutive and in a straight line, could be seen as three steps away from each other which followed the other gimmicks.
That is the danger of reading comments on AB I suppose. Thanks for the challenge, Poat.
