I didn't solve this so I admit I'm probably speaking out of turn. I'll just say three things:
Firstly, I read the preamble out of interest, having seen the comments, and The H A R E described by John above may be CONTINUOUS, but not CONSECTIVE, which surely rules it out.
Secondly I confess to being at a loss to see how John Green's preference for sending properly snipped grids is relevant in any way. The rubric just says "send your entry" - not "cut out the completed grid" which I agree would be problematic. But here the preamble is part of the solution, and needs to be treated accordingly. Had I solved the puzzle and found the right HARE I don't think my awareness of John's request would have held me back for a second.
Thirdly, this really isn't a case of the Crossword Editors' Union ganging up on the unfortunate solvers. I did not attempt this puzzle, and had I done so maybe I would also have been complaining :-)
