Listener 4426 by Harribobs IP: 184.108.40.206 Posted on December 17, 2016 at 07:31:11 AM by Andy Stewart
After eleven years of solving the Listener (mostly correctly) I have at last appeared among the winners. I had been thinking of posting a message asking what is the statistical probability of NOT winning in eleven years of submitting mostly correct entries.
Thank you, Harribobs (and whoever drew the names out of the hat).
Fortunately I can say that I very much enjoyed the puzzle. Harribobs' clues are usually solver-friendly, and that was the case here, though a few tricky ones added a bit of challenge. Clue constructions were very neat and I liked the occasional display of wit such as in 23d.
I vaguely remember a previous Listener where decoding a message in Morse code was nightmarish, but the representation of letter and word spacing here made decoding a very straightforward process.
The grid looks as though it could have been quite tricky to construct to achieve the final coded message. Replies:
