Already anxious Darby nearly falls out of his skin when some girl yells and slaps his hand away from the door. The tears he’d quelled before start to fall in earnest, tracking down his cheeks. Despite his frequent ability to chatter along with birds and flowers and insects Darby has no ideas what these words mean. They aren’t nice. Her tone tells him that. The words she aimed at him really upset him, even though he couldn’t see her angry face in the darkness.

He shoves in her general direction. Of course hitting doesn’t solve anything, but that thought is far from Darby’s mind just now. His emotions of panic and frustration flowed overboard and he wanted to hurt her because her words were hurtful. That was enough of a reason for the young boy.

Taking a deep breath, Darby pouted. It was a sound audible in his voice. A huff as he made the childish decision to be truly disagreeable despite his generally agreeable nature. He shook his head despite it being a gesture that the other kid, the bigger kid, surely wouldn’t notice. What could he do? He wanted to tell somebody about how mean she was, but now he was locked in a closet with her. He didn’t even have the comfort of his imaginary friend to talk to.

“You’re a meanie.”

Darby shouted at her, despite the fact that he didn’t want to talk to her. Or he didn’t think he did. He was rather confused under the circumstances. He really didn’t have too much experience with not nice people. Maybe Peets, but she still loved him.

“An’ why would I tell you my name if you’re just going to be a big, big meanie.”

At a loss for words Darby backed away from her and unfortunately that meant also backing away from the door. He tried to at least limit the quaver that meant he was crying from his voice. His vocabulary was currently very frustrating. He didn’t know words to retaliate with. Things like jerk or little shit just didn’t exist yet in Darby’s vocabulary. And who was she anyway? Her words came back and he almost asked them, wanting to mimic that tone, before he remembered that he didn’t care.

“I’m not talking to you.”

This was easier said than done in their current situation. As much as Darby hated her, he’s sure he does, he doesn’t want to be alone, either.
