Viserys could sense that something was different today. Something about Ankh's scent had changed, and she was far more restless than usual. Something drove him to find her something to eat, some primal instinct he assumed, to provide and care for his mate and approaching family. He did not like being driven by such basal things, it made him uncomfortable, as if he was betraying the higher consciousness that was bestowed upon him by whatever Gods existed. But he obeyed anyway. It was easy enough to find the small prey piles that had been left by the hunters, and the lost prince was beyond grateful for it. Even if his morals allowed him to hunt, his physiology forbid him.
The sun was beginning to set, the dying light casting an almost ethereal glow over the rocky escarpments of Diveen. He hurried home, and arrived just in time to see Ankh slip inside the den. A smell that he recognized easily hung in the air, and Viserys knew it was time. The hares dropped from his maw and he followed her, nuzzling and licking and kissing as she laid down, knowing that she was in pain but unable to do much to help. It was the natural way, and doing anything to relieve the pain at this point could be damaging. The male did not like that she needed to feel this, but there was little he could do except comfort her. Her strangled cry made his heart feel tight as if it was being constricted. "Shh, my love. You are doing great. I know it hurts, but... think of what this is for. Our family. It will be over soon."
As the pups began to come, he realized that something was wrong. There was... too much blood. It was not life-threatening, but he recognized that it was more painful than it should be. The pups were tearing her up. Viserys gritted his teeth. He placed the first pup near her stomach after licking him clean. There was little time to muse over their firstborn, though, as he was more concerned with Ankh. The pups would be fine so long as they were kept warm with milk to drink. He repeated the process with the next two pups, an impossible length of time seeming to stretch between each one. And finally it was done, but Ankh had little relief. Her quiet word caused him to narrow his eyes slightly.
"Don't worry dearheart, I am taking care of you." Viserys murmured, moving towards the corner of the den to fetch the herbs he had stockpiled in event of something like this happening. Poppy seeds for the pain, burdock to prevent infection and raspberry leaves to slow blood loss. He placed the small satchel of herbs near her mouth, nosing them towards her. "Here, love. These will help." He moved behind her to do what he could in that regard, but her body would have to heal. Many wounds were internal. "Our children are healthy and you will be just fine. Rest, dear, let your body heal. I will watch over you all." He came to her side to curl up next to her, placing his head atop her neck, teal eyes affixed on the den's entrance. "I love you, Ankh."
