Given Evren did not know Vita Nova all that well yet, she had not been entirely sure how the mare would react to being openly called out on her illicit escapades. It was possible, even probable, that she might have become defensive and angry, and accuse Evren of spying on her (which would have been accurate), which, in turn, would likely have ruined any chance of them becoming friends. It was no secret, after all, that Evren was still in Koray's back pocket; she had little choice, being so young, but to try and stay in his good books. But, as she returned Vita Nova's stare, Evren felt no fear.
And her risk paid off, in the end. Vita Nova smiled, as though simply relieved to be addressed so honestly. Evren felt another pang of sympathy for the mare; she could only imagine how isolating it was, having no comrades of her own and constantly being at the mercy of Koray's sharp tongue.
The tall filly returned her companion's smile. "Good," she replied. Evren was tempted to ask Vita Nova to elaborate and describe Luthien in great detail - for she had never left the desert and hungered for knowledge of the outside world - but, sensing now was not the time, she held her tongue and made a mental note to ask later. She ignored the remark about her family – for she preferred to simply not think about how long they had been gone – and laughed at the mare's comment about her brother. "I guess not, but he can be a real pain sometimes, can't he?" She took a moment to glance around at the long shadows that stretched across the landscape, to make sure the stallion in question was nowhere nearby.
"By the way, don't worry. Koray doesn't know, and I won't tell him," she reassured Vita, taking a step closer and tilting her head slightly as a coy smile tugged at her lips. "He told me to keep an eye on you, but I know you can take care of yourself."
