Re(5): Captured Tracks - Who Stole the Dynamics Off Lizardland? IP: 184.108.40.206 Posted on January 18, 2017 at 03:00:22 AM by Tom
Ted, I have not heard Koolcat's version but it came out in 2012 so I would be surprised if it sounded any better than the new one. But thanks, though.
The era of compression was firmly in place in '12. The original 1989 CD and the 1995 reissue sound fine, sans the extra tracks.
For those who are not sure what DR is, it simply is dynamic range, or the difference in dB between the loudest and quietest parts of the music. For example, the opening guitar in "A Day in the Life" should be noticeably quieter than the orchestral crescendos in the song. Sadly, since the Nineties, the engineers who master CDs have been jacking everything up with compression until there are no more peaks and valleys, just big blocks of ear-fatiguing rectangular noise. Most times the artists are unaware of this because the music sounds good on the master tape that leaves the studio...before it is mastered. Replies:
