The shock of Aster’s words stole all thoughts from Pine’s mind. She could never have imagined the princess she had known from puppyhood would have said such things. Aster, who had proclaimed herself an Empress before she could even breath was willingly handing the crown over to another. She blinked as she tried to grasp this concept, took a step back when the removed crown was all but handed to her. It was nearly blasphemous. Even to think about taking the spot that had been forever meant for Aster, and Aithne’s line.
The silence between them stretched. Pine had vowed her life to protect and obey Aster. The oath had indeed turned into an unshakable friendship. In this moment, this time of open vulnerability she knew what her ruler, her queen, her companion needed from her most. Even if she did not think the crown would fit, she would wear it because that was what she had nearly been ordered to do.
Shakily, she tried to remain light, bring the smile back to her charge’s face. Yeah, I caught him peeing in Diveen. She said offhandedly, voice distant and hollow, clearly not where it was needed. She closed her eyes and let the reality finally sink in. Slowly, she pushed out her breath and opened her eyes with a new steadfast determination. The Pine that played and rustled through the water’s reeds sparkled in the brown flecks of her irises. A different wolf shined in the deep green. The maturity she had occasionally shown, the sense of duty, honor, and responsibility stepped forth and took a steadfast hold on her. She stepped forward, her body held at attention in front of Aster, a strange formality between them. If this is truly what you want, Aster. If you want me to fight, and rule, in your stead… I will do so in honor of you, your family, and your mother.
