Many thanks for this, Richard. Where the BALLUSTRADE clue is concerned, it is, I suppose, fair enough, but I’m afraid it does not convince me in the case of the CELEBRATIONS one, which strikes me as crucially different. “It bears cope” is a perfectly acceptable definition of BALLUSTRADE. What is required in the s.i. of the CELEBRATIONS clue is an valid anagram indicator for “bar selection”. Even if “It mars” is thought in itself to provide that, one has to ask what “It” represents in the context of the s.i. The answer must, presumably, be “Celebrations”, but that would give the quite ungrammatical “Celebrations mars bar selection”. I find it hard to see how this is acceptable when, for instance, “I go into XYZ” for “Insert the letter I into XYZ” is routinely verboten, on the ground that the third rather than the first person singular is required to follow that meaning of ‘I’.
