“If you are not sorry,” she said, her voice a low growl, as she trotted along the forest floor, “Then do not say so. In my country, people say what they mean, not what’s expected.” She did not understand the need for politeness that she had encountered in other areas of the world. She did not believe in empty words, promises or apologies with no intent. What was the point of speaking then? She refused to say anything that she felt compelled to say for the sake of another’s ego or comfort zone. Two things surprised her. The first was that he followed her. She hadn’t expected that in the least. As he had so aptly put, all creatures were selfish and his apology hadn’t meant much, as she’d suspected. The second was that he was still talking. Sasha herself was not a creature of many words, even more so when food was on the line. She doubted game would be found with all this noise. He seemed to her, the perfect example, of the rhetoric he spouted, his need to speak overriding her need for a meal. “Clearly,” was all she said before falling silent for a moment, shooting him a hard glance before averting her attention to the path ahead of her, though she mulled over what he said before speaking once more. “Though can you really call the natural expression of our wants and urges transcendence if they are always present? Seems to me that it simply is and always is.”  |
