Listener 4432 - A Sign of The Times by Schadenfreude IP: 22.214.171.124 Posted on February 1, 2017 at 01:20:03 PM by Andy Stewart
I enjoyed this puzzle but I had one or two quibbles with the clueing. 'Learner' for SEER in 1a was pushing it for me, the Chambers definition for 'see' notwithstanding. When in normal discourse would anyone understand 'seer' to mean learner? I was also puzzled by 'trap' for PUSS in 31d, since the Chambers definition is face, not mouth, which is the Irish derivation.
The execution of the theme was well up to the usual Schadenfreude standard, and a grid consisting of real words at both intermediate and final stage was a great achievement.
My only other query was why he chose to call it A Sign of The Times, since the garter motto in the Times logo is arranged quite differently. Replies:
